Default William Roy Cope A/G 95 Sqn

    Ladies and gents,

I have guests staying with me at the moment and have asked we can assist in some details of their relative.

The family story is as follows.

    William Roy Cope Air Gunner
    95 Sqn
    RAF Coningsby

Entered service late war and is reputed to have been on raids to Germany, and survived the war.
    There is a but!
As far as their own search for details, they have found no trace of him in the 95 Sqn ORB.

Any information and help would be most grateful.

    Regards
    Chris

    Hello,

Hardly surprising they found no mention of Cope in the No.95 Sqn ORB. No.95 Sqn operated mainly Sunderlands, on the West Coast of Africa. Long way from Coningsby. Maybe, No.97 Sqn?

    Chris, Hi,

The only William Roy Cope that easily comes up on the E&W BMD sites is:-

    Births Q2 1906
Cope William Roy Bath 5c 456

First name(s) William Roy Last name Cope
Age 18. Birth year 1906 Service number 398363
Regiment Royal Tank Corps. Attestation year 1924. Enlistment date 8 Jan 1924
Birth parish Twerton. Birth town Bath Birth county Somerset

First name(s) William Roy. Last name Cope
Birth year 1906. Admission year 1925 Age 19
Trade Carpenters & joiners. Union name Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers
    Union branch Bath 1

I would think that these are the same bloke, but if it is he, it would make him a bit old (37?) to be Enlisting in the RAFVR? Can someone with the right bit of AIR 78 check his Service Number. But, as usual, most of these questions can only start to be answered with the person's Service Record (from Disclosures at RAF Cranwell). I know this takes a long time to appear (apart from the 30!) but it stops wild geese being chased up gum trees!

    Nothing in Air 78/36.

However, ancestry.co.uk has a William Roy Cope, d.o.b. June 25th 1925, died 2006 in Basford. If you try that d.o.b. in FreeBMD, you get a William R. Cope, birth registered Basford in September 1925.

    Hi Col,

Well spotted, you are right, I have just asked about the Sqn, it was 97 Sqn.

    Hi Gents,

William Roy Cope was born in Nottingham around 1924-26 (Basford)
    Simon, this is the chap.

Now we need to find if/where he served

The family believe it was 97 Sqn and that he was a rear gunner

    regards

    Chris

Bringing this back to the front as I am unable to change the title, hence the title may distract potential heelp

W R Cope was with 97 Sqn and not 95 Sqn.
