Default Wing Commander Michael John Earle DFC??

Hi there, I am looking for any confirmation that my great uncle was awarded the DFC.
He was also awarded the Order of the White Lion of Czechoslovakia. This was reported in his obituary. He was Wing Commander with No. 38 Bomber Squadron and later with Transport Command. Also, Instructor for the 311 (Czechoslovak) Squadron RAF. He originally joined the RAF on a short service commission in 1935.
He was also offered an OBE for his work at the end of the war at what is now Ben Guron Airport in Palestine. Im guessing if you decline an OBE there's no record of it.
His RAF service number was 39164.
I can't find any confirmation of this in The Gazette.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks, Nicola

    Hi Nicola, welcome aboard!

brief info from my 311 Squadron book:

    EARLE Michael John
    39164
    F/L
    NAV instructor, Adjutant
    08/40-05/41
    awarded honorary Czechoslovak pilot badge

If he would be awarded the DFC it would be definitely recorded in the London Gazette. The same would be with the Order of the White Lion.
So I am sorry but I have doubts he was awarded any of those twoo.
I will check my archive if I will find anything more for the the Order of the White Lion but he is not listed in the official list of czech Prague Castle office:

P.S. may I ask you if you have a WWII photo of him in the RAF uniform?

    Nicola,

I have checked one of the most reliable sources for Recipients of Foreign Awards*. Unfortunately, there is no mention of a Michael John Earle,.

    *
Honour The Recipients of Foreign Awards 1914-1968.
    Maton,Michael.
    Honiton:Token Publishing Ltd.,2013.

Nor is a DFC listed for him in the following publication:

The Distinguished Flying Cross and How It Was Won 1918-1995.
    Carter,Nick & Carol.
    London:Savannah,1998.

    I also checked the following;

Honour The Air Forces Honours and Awards to the RAF and Dominion Forces During the Second World War.
    Maton,Michael.
    Honiton:Token Publishing,2013.

    Nothing there either.

The only mentions I can find for Awards/Honours to Michael John Earle, are two (2) Mentions in Despatches:

    RAF 39184[sic] EARLE, M. J. - Flt Lt. - Distinguished Service - LG: 24-9-1941.

    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...upplement/5571

    RAFO 39164 EARLE, M. J. - A/W/Cdr. - New Year's Honours List - LG: 1/1/1945.

    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/.../supplement/63

    See:
Honour Those Mentioned. Mentions in Despatches to the RAF and Dominion Air Forces During WWII.
    Maton.Michael.
    Honiton:Token Publishing,2010.
    p.128

    and ...

    Short Service Commission.

    Air Ministry, 27th October, 1936.

    ROYAL AIR FORCE.

    GENERAL DUTIES BRANCH.

The undermentioned are granted short service commissions as Acting Pilot Officers on probation with effect from and with seniority of 12th Oct. 1936.

    Michael John EARLE.

The July 1945 Air Force List does not mention a D.F.C. Nicola, do you have his service record? Or perhaps know when he left the RAF?

    Default Thanks all

Thanks everyone for checking your sources. I'm still waiting on a photo of him in uniform.
The mention of him having a DFC was in his obituary and also a newspaper article in 1943 - https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ne...A19430701.2.39
but a good researcher double-checks the facts so thanks guys for helping me out there. Unfortunately not quite the result I was going for though.
    Cheers
    Nicola

I don't know when he left the RAF but he was working for British Air Transport in Surrey in 1947 so I'm assuming around that time. He returned to NZ in the 60s, never married or had kids. His record I'm assuming is still with the RAF and I'm not sure if I would qualify as next of kin but maybe my Dad (his nephew) would.

    Hello,

And a poor quality newspaper shot:

    A better one here:

And some interesting background bio material here:
