    Default Anti-submarine patrols (Western Approaches / Bay of Biscay)

    A bit of a long shot, but does anyone have a listing which shows the terms used by anti-submarine patrols relating to, what I presume are, locations in the Western Approaches / Bay of Biscay.

    Examples in the ORB include B.Rock and MFB1

    B Rock is Bishops Rock but is normally listed as APX where X is a number 1 to 18 (AP is Approaches Patrol)

    Neither extract from the ORB are for standard A/S patrols looks liike a local shorthand note by the scribe.

    If MFB1 is from Dale or Talbenny then possibly a corruption of BPF which was Bay Patrol Fastnet

    The information is in 10 OTU ORB (detachment based at St Eval) during 1942/1943; they were flying Whitley's on anti-submarine patrols using crews from OTUs.

    The entry shows "1013 B Rock. 1405 MFB1 increasing wind speed. 1621 B Rock" so I can only assume it was the next location after Bishops Rock. There is another entry which shows "1000 B Rock. 1010 MTBI instrument trouble" if that helps unravel it.

    Pete,

    the answer is very simple and has nothing to do with location:
    MFB - Messase from Base, i.e. base was informing the aircraft anout the increasing wind speed in comparison with forecast obtained during briefing.
    MTB - Message to Base, i.e. aircraft was informing base about an instrument trouble.
