    Default Pilots' Forenames

    Hi all

Despite several years researching 41 Squadron’s ca. 360 WWII pilots, I still have a handful of men whose forenames remain a mystery, and was hoping someone on the forum may have some ideas.

In each case I am seeking forenames and, where possible, further biographical data, but at the same time would also appreciate some form of confirmation that anyone nominated actually served with 41 Squadron.

    They are:

    [‘d/u’ implies ‘date unknown’]

    1. BEARD, A. W.

Sgt. Plt., 1331949, RAFVR; b. Wanstead, 4 Dec. 1922; ed. Hi Dave

Thanks for this info. Do you have online access to the BMDs?

In regard to Anthony Beard, did you mean to write Anthony A. Beard? The initials I have for him are A.W.?

    Thanks

    Steve,

    Anthony W Beard of course!

Have had another look for Vann without success.

BMD registers are available for England & Wales for a small look up fee at

    http://www.findmypast.com/BirthsMarriagesDeaths.jsp

For Scotland's BMD the look up fee is somewhat larger but has the added advantage that you may download copies of the death register pages at

    http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/welcome.aspx

There appears to be no on-line access to the registers in Ireland, north or south.

    regards

The lack of Irish (N or S) BMD data is probably due to the fact that most of the original documentation was destroyed in a fire during the first lot of Troubles. That documentation would then have encompassed the whole of the island of Ireland.

    Steve,

you can get a certain amount of the England and Wales BMD at FreeBMD.org.uk.

    Steve,

Sgt A W Beard 1331949 is listed as a member of Number 7 Intake, 5 (P)AFU on the 12th May 1942. Interestingly it lists his nationality as Canadian! Must be a mistake though as it shows no R prefix for his service number which is does for the other Canadians.

    Sgt M P Rowe (926918) is listed with 9 Intake, 2nd June 1942.

Regarding Gibson, i have the contact details for Rugby School's archivist if you wish to contact him. I did with regards to an airman who DOAS and he was very useful. He may be able to help? You could try contacting the schools for those other airmen you have education details for (If you havent already tried that).

Hope that helps. I'll see if i can find any more of them with 5 (P)AFU.

    Cheers, Tom
