Default A memorial appeal for the Guinea Pig Club

The Guinea Pig Club is 75 this year: of the 649 members, only 18 remain. Maggie Saunders, wife of one of the 18, has started a project to raise funds for a memorial (long overdue) dedicated to the Guinea Pigs to be unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire, in November of this year. After consultation with Jagan, I am happy to say RAFCommands is offering support to the Guinea Pig Memorial project. A fuller explanation and means of contributing are here ...

... which is only live for 30 days, beginning on May 15th.

After the memorial is open I will put up a Guinea Pig Page for the RAFC website. I would ask for anyone from this forum who contributes to please leave a message on the crowdfunding page stating that you came via RAFCommands so I can acknowledge your part in the project. Plus, I will respond to any contributions so made and identified by doing some free file copying at Kew.

I must declare an interest, as there is a family link to a Guinea Pig.

Please contact me off-board if you have any questions.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Bruce

Update: Maggie Saunders has now raised 29% of the target to fund a memorial to the Guinea Pig Club. She is not in a position at the moment to reply to each donation or message but please be assured they are much appreciated.

Please see link in the first post.

The fund has raised 33% of it's target. My thanks to the members of RAFCommands who have contributed so far, and just a reminder that I will credit any member with file copying to the value of their contribution (I will be in trouble if someone coughs up 1000 but I will just have to take that chance!).

A further, and most welcome, update: the fund will stay live until September. It was originally due to end after 30 days.

A big thanks to those from the forum who have contributed so far, and a reminder that donors from this forum who acknowledge the RAF Commands connection will receive free file copying at TNA Kew to the value of their contributions, courtesy of filephotoservice.co.uk.

The funding website for a memorial for The Guinea Pig Club is now closed. 10,022 was raised of 20,000 target by 179 supporters and I have been encouraged to believe that the memorial will proceed.
Several forum members took up the offer of research/copying in return for a contribution to the fund. Thank you to all who chose this route.
    Regards,
    Bruce

Sandy Saunders, the Guinea Pig behind the funding campaign, has been in the news again:

I am glad he got this flight but wish it was better news.

Sandy Saunders: WW2 'Guinea Pig' pilot dies from cancer
    28 February 2017

One of the last surviving members of a group of World War Two pilots who underwent pioneering plastic surgery has died from cancer.Dr Sandy Saunders, who was badly burnt in a RAF crash in 1945, died on Sunday.
The 94-year-old, from Leicestershire, along with other wounded veterans were given experimental skin grafts - they were dubbed the Guinea Pig Club.
In September, he flew for the final time in a Tiger Moth plane - the same type of aircraft in which he crashed.
