Default Sgt Sidney John Jones (*1929), Nr. 67 sq, Guetersloh - crash Vampire VV607, 6.11.1950

    Hello everybody,

this is my very first posting in this Forum and every Information is appreciated.

On 6.11.1950 Sgt Sidney John Jones (*1929), RAF-servicenumber 4030422, Nr. 67 squadron, air base Guetersloh, was killed in a crash with his Vampire (VV607) in Dornberg near Bielefeld, Germany.

The district council of Dornberg/City of Bielefeld wants to recall this tragic incident but needs more Information and so I ask this Forum - Iīm in touch with the National Archives - professional Researchers are not commissioned so far:

    • where was Sidney John Jones Born on 15.8.1929?
    • where was he buried?
    • are there relatives?
    • are there comrades of sq 67, who remember him or the accident?
    • are former members of 2nd MRSU from air base Gutersloh, which saved the wreckage next day?
    • are there detailled Information about the Crash? Was there a collision with a second Vampire or has it been a pilotīs error?
    • how experienced was Sgt Jones?
    • who was the Pilot of the second Vampire?

Thanks for any help and Kind regards
    p.p.

    Hello Dr. Rath

A small piece of information, from the Leicester Daily Mercury newspaper of November 6th 1950:

    "R.A.F. Jets Collide: Pilot Killed
Two Royal Air Force jet fighters collided near Bielefeld, Germany, today, and one crashed, kiling its pilot. His name has not been disclosed. The other plane went on to nearby Guetersloh air base."

The National Archives website has the 67 Squadron ORB (Operational Record Book) available for Ģ3.45, which may have details:

    http://discovery.nationalarchives.go...ils/r/D8424988

The 'image viewer' preview of page 10 seems to have the accident recorded.

    Regards

    Simon

    Hello Simon,

thanks for your instant help - thatīs great!

    • other newspapers (Gloucestershire Echo and Cloucester Citizen) seem to Report the same way the Leicester Daily Mercury did, so itīs likely the same source/news wire, but Iīm not able to do more research in online-newspapers because there are only liable for costs.
    • unfortunately the 67-ORB is very short at that point: "Weather in the morning was bad. Sgt Jones was killed in a flying accident during the morning operations."
    • even the 1180-form presumably doesnīt give detailed Information about the crash.

    Thank you again

    Jochen

    Hi Jochen,

Courtesy of Roger Lindsay book "Cold War Shield volume 2" ,www.coldwarshield.co.uk....

"Sgt Pilor Sydney John Jones, 21, was killed when his Vampire VV607, collided with his formation leader in cloud during the mornings sorties, lost control and crashed"
Just before that it says that the squadron had an influx of four NCO pilots who had never flown Vampires. Wether this implies Jones was one of those is not clear.

    regards Peter
