Default Commonwealth War Graves on Rhodes

I had just come back from Rhodes, Greece a few years back and I had scribbled the names of all the commonwealth Air Force crews commemorated in the cemetery there onto the back of a holiday information sheet. I have since found the piece of paper in a major clean up in the spare room. It was always my intention to start a database or website of all the information I could find on these guys but it never happened.

What I would like to do is start to collate all the information that anyone has onto the excel spreedsheet and to make all the info tie up with each entry.

Obviously I know that a lot of you spend hundreds of pounds on your research and I am not trying to steal or better any one persons work I would just like to get all the info into one place as a tribute to the guys still on Rhodes.

If you dont want your reseach to be made public please just say I will not be offended by it.

for starters here is the basic CWGC details on the guys.

obviously there are a few more bits on these guys but I would just like to find out a bit more on these guys. It really isnt my speciality this type of thing so please help.

If you want the excel sheet sending to you so you can reference from it then please pm or email me and I will pass it on.

I may also include all the grave names to include all the navy and soldiers named as well but lets see how this one goes first.

obvious details needed are aircraft accidents ids etc etc any missing of family details or personal account etc etc. circumstances of death. There are also a few close to my area here in Scotland on was from Edinburgh another from Gosford which is 5 mins from my door and there was another Scot there as well.

would love to hear what your guys think.

    regards Scott

    Scott,

From my 'For Your Tomorrow - a record of New Zealanders who had died while serving with the RNZAF and Allied Air Services since 1915 (Vol Two: Fates 1942-1998)':

    Thu 2 Sep 1943
    MEDITERRANEAN AIR COMMAND
Offensive reconnaissance over the Dodecanese Islands
227 Squadron, RAF (Limassol, Cyprus - 237 Wing[?], 201 Group[?], Middle East[?])
Beaufighter VIC JL522/Z - took off at 1028 with three others and failed to return. While carrying out a strike near Cos, hit the sea and exploded after the port wing struck the mast of a caique. Taken prisoner, only the navigator survived. His pilot was buried on Cos, but later reinterred at Rhodes.
Pilot: NZ412789 Flt Lt Walter Young McGREGOR, DFC, RNZAF - Age 26. 468hrs. 45th op.
McGregor’s brother, John Dunlop McGregor, died on 29 July 1942 while flying with 1651 Conversion Unit, RAF.

And from Amendment section of Vol Three:
navigator later reported that his pilot had been killed by flak immediately before the crash.

    Errol
navigator later reported that his pilot had been killed by flak immediately before the crash.

Altho I can't find them on the CWGC but by the date of death,
    Gray,A.P 28/10/43
    Martel,G.D 19/9/43
    Hetherington,W 3/10/43
    Gay,N.W 9/10/43

Suggest 2909 Squadron RAF Regt. landing with LRDG,SAS,SBS on the Island of Cos.

    Default Lord/Dawes

    For John Larder,

Regarding DAWES, the info I posted above re LORD was taken from his service record, which does not contain any info regarding the other crewmember.

Lord's casualty file is held at NA Australia but has not been scanned. It would of course reveal the name of the Navigator.

    Cheers, Ken

    Firstly,

thanks for all the information guys just what I was looking for Already added this to the excel file.

    Hi John

Regarding N W Gay I have him listed with 74 sqn from the CWGC site and not 2909 RAF Reg.

Also one other member of the team is listed as with 2901 RAF Reg do you think this is a typo or is there actually a 2901.

I was going to have a look at the Aussie records as I have had some success there before but you beat me to it.

please feel free to post another thread or a link to this one on another forum as the more info I can collate the better.

    Thanks again guys.

I have a photograph of the whole crew (Leslie, Loveridge, McLean, Moore, Pattle, Winterbottom). Tommy was the only son of one of my mother's sisters. There is still an elderly cousin from Altrincham who remembers him. I understand that they were based in Egypt and their aircraft was the only one that did not return from the mission.
