    Brian,

A possibility for your "Sgt Webb":

    Distinguished Flying Medal.

WEBB, Howard Sidney. 632851 Sergeant, No.59 Sqn.
    L.G. 28/1/1941. Wireless Operator/Air Gunner.

Sergeant Webb has been a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner to Flt. Lt. R. W. Ayres D.F.C., and has taken part in a large number of operational flights. He has at all times shown great courage, determination and coolness of a high order and has been of the greatest assistance to his pilot. On one occasion when his guns had been damaged and after he was slightly wounded in the face, he directed his pilot's evasive manoeuvres while being attacked by twelve Me.109s. The aircraft returned safely to base*. On another occasion, although wounded by anti-aircraft fire, he continued to direct the pilot's tactics for the evasion of flak and searchlights and, on the way home, made persistent efforts to repair his wireless set which had been put out of action by shell fire. He has shot down one enemy aircraft and has probably damaged others. He has set a fine example to others and his conduct is worthy of an award.

    16th December, 1940.

    See:Tavender/II/K-Z/914-916.

Not sure if you've seen this site:

    http://number59squadron.com/memorial...al_ullman.html

but it has Sgt Thirkill as part of P/O Robert Ullman's crew of 59 Sqn in 1940.

    Thanks Simon and Col

Yes, that is 'my' Webb - great stuff!

I've found 905398 Sgt P.H.H. THIRKELL DFM (not Thirkill) who may be 'my' man. Any ideas?

    Cheers

According to Air 78/156 905398 is Patrick Hubert Harold Thirkell, although he is recorded as Patrick Herbert Harold Thirkell in the LG and the CWGC.

His DFM was gazetted in the LG on June 6th 1941, whilst with 44 Sqn.

    Hi guys

Has anyone the citation for Thirkell's DFM? That may mention his previous unit and the specific reason for is award.

    Cheers

    Brian,

    Re: Thirkell's DFM Recommendation.

THIRKELL, Patrick Harold Herbert. 905398 Sergeant, No.44 Sqn.

    L.G. 6/6/1941. Sorties 26, Flying hours 162. Wireless Operator. Air/29333.

Sergeant Thirkell has acted as Wireless Operator on 26 operational flights involving a total of 162 hours. This experienced young operator has never had a failure in the air and this is largely due to his thoroughness and preparation before flight. His Captains of aircraft have always been able to rely upon his ability, coolness and courage under all conditions and he has inspired confidence in his Navigators by his skill. His devotion to duty has set a high standard amongst his Wireless Operators in his squadron.

    22nd March, 1941.

    See: Tavender/II/K-Z/797.

    Hi Col

Thanks for that. I would seem that he was NOT my man after all! However, the ORB shows him to be THIRKELL (not Thirkill!)

    Keep searching!!

    Cheers
