Default Catalina AH533 and the capture of U570, should it be AH553

Ref my previous thread regarding the crash of Catalina AH533 at Jura on 15.7.41. Other reports including IWM has AH533 involved in the capture of U-570 on August 27, 1941. Presume the latter is a dyslexic mistake and this aircraft was AH553 of 209 Squadron as flown by F.O. Jewiss. Please confirm.

    Robin:

This from a 269 Sqn narrative that I believe is no longer online. Don't know the source(s). 269 Sqn was heavily involved with their Hudsons and one of their aircraft took the surrender. The squadron subsequently acquired U-570's battle flag and I was surprised to see it on display in the RAF Museum at Hendon a few years back.

    But I digress...

    For August 27, 1941:

Catalina (AH553/WQ-J, Flg. Off. Jewis [sic]) took off from Reykjavik at 1100 hrs and sighted the U-570 in position JHX 1525 at 1344 hrs. Captain was instructed to stand by pending arrival of surface force. Trawler sighted at 2145 hrs and given position of U-570. Entire crew observed in conning tower, approx 8 officers in forward section and 30 in rear. Weather poor, rain showers, visibility 8 to 10 miles, falling in rain. Cloud base 800 feet, sea rough. A second Catalina (AH565/WQ-H, Flt Lt B Lewin) was on an Anti-submarine sweep in the area and sighted U-570 at 1745hrs. ‘10 men on deck ‘waving a white flag’. A US Catalina of VP-73 and a Glenn Martin Mariner PBM1 of VP-74 were also sighted in area. (See Appendix D for two German accounts of this incident). One section of the 33rd Pursuit Squadron was deployed to Kaldađarnes Airfield. The sections spent one week at a time at Kaldađarnes, being relieved by another.
