149 Squadron July 1940

Hi guys

Another for the experts!

On the night of 19/20 July, the crew of a 149 Squadron Wellington claimed two night fighters shot down (according to Larry Donnelly's The Other Few

I've a copy of 149's ORB for July, and it gives no indication of which crew. Can anyone help, please?

Hi Brian,

According to the entries in the appendices of ORB 3 Group (AIR25/59) it concerned two different crews:

F/O G-Jones
Attacked by ME.110 over North Sea on outward journey. Burst by rear gunner point blank range. E.A dived towards see.

Sgt Sayers
Attacked by ME.110 over North Sea at 14000'. E.A. believed shot down.

Excellent! I have now been able to establish that Sgt Sayers was flying R3164 and that his gunner was Sgt Cannon; and that Flg Off Griffith-Jones was captain of L7918 with Sgt Legge as rear gunner.

I now need to find their first names/initials!

Thanks also for the gen on Sgt Thurkell of 44 Squadron.
