    Default Halifax S Gear

Has anybody any sound suggestions as to what this reference may relate to -Port Inner S Gear was the source of the problem- The reference to Port Inner obviously relates to the engine so I am wondering what s gear could relate to within an engine the type of which will have been a R R Merlin. A rather technical question which may just mean something to a forum member with expertise in such matters.

    Thanks for thinking for me.

The Halifax Merlins had single-stage superchargers and two gears. These two gears were normally termed MS and FS, for medium speed and full speed. Sorry, I don't recall which was used for lower levels and which for higher. The problem presumably is a gearbox one. The Merlin in Perspective (RR Historical Trust) discusses problems with the Halifax caused by vibrations leading to wear of the roller bearings but also cracking of the reduction gear casing. There were a number of internal mods to improve this, with the fitting of 4-blade propellers proving the best. Which may not have been the problem under discussion, of course.

Gents that all makes perfect sense I wanted to be as sure as I could be the understanding of two speed supercharges also helps me. Thank you.
