Default 114 Sqn Blenheim aircrew 1940

    114 Sqn Blenheim aircrew 1940

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi guys

I am trying to establish the full identities on a 114 Squadron Blenheim aircrew circa 1940:

    Plt Off G. Turner (pilot)
    Sgt Canning (observer)
    Sgt Stockdale (air gunner)

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers
    Brian

    Brian,

I believe the pilot was 41498 P/O George Turner, General Duties Branch with seniority from 3September 1939.
This information from the online August 1940 Air Force List, so was correct up to some date in July 1940. He is the only 'G. Turner' There are other Gs (G.L., etc) but none seem to match due to rank or branch of service.
Unfortunately I cannot find anything on Canning or Stockdale, but I too would like to learn their first names.

    Regards,

    Martin Gleeson.

    Many thanks once again, Martin

One would have thought that a name like Stockdale would be relatively easy to find, but I've similarly had no luck to date.

    Cheers

    Brian,

I assume the incident you are interested in was this crew's combat on 31 July 1940 ? I have checked the ORB from June to December 1940 for any reference to them. This combat appears to have been their first mission together and they only flew two more together, on August 13th and 19th. There are the only three occasions Canning and Stockdale appear in the ORB. P/O Turner flew one other mission with a different crew on July 11th.
It seems reasonable to suggest they were posted to another (Blenheim) unit around late August 1940. Or they may have been detailed to ferry a Blenheim to the Middle East. Quite a common practice then for 2 Group Blenheim crews to be taken off operations for such a task, but most seem to have been retained in the Middle East. Indeed on 1 December 1940 the 114 Sqn. ORB notes one of their crews had safely reached Malta.
Unfortunately there is a massive gap in the 114 Sqn. Appendices, from April 1940 to August 1941 inclusive.

    Regards,

    Martin.

    Hello,

41498 George TURNER, later transferred to the RCAF.

See: http://www.rcafassociation.ca/heritage/search-awards Place 41498 in Keywords box, click on Service Number, hit search.

    Looks like the right man.

I suspect Canning is "J Canning" who painted this in 1940 but still no nearer ID him

    Hi guys

Thanks for the leads. Indeed, George Turner was a Canadian, confirmed in Les Allison's 'Canadians in the RAF'; he left 114 Squadron in October 1940 for night fighting training; received DFC January 1945. Transferred to RCAF.

And the artist John Canning looks likely to have been the observer.

    We're getting there!

    Cheers

    Hi Paul

I don't know if it is the same person! I was speculating the possibility.

    Cheers
    Brian
