    Default Rhodesian Connection

Thank you for allowing me to join your forum.
By means of a brief introduction, I was born and raised in Rhodesia, and came to live in Derby in 1999. Three years ago I made the decision to follow my biggest passion in life: full-time researching and writing. I specialise in military history, and to date I have published several books. This year, I have also released two books on UK local history, with a third due in two weeks' time. I am also working on Cold War titles.
As an aside, if that makes any sense, I am involved in a massive project to record full nominal rolls and rolls of honour for Rhodesia from 1890 to 1980. This includes 'non-Rhodesians' who lost their lives on Rhodesian soil. A good example of this, and the one which brought me to your forum as some of your members were looking for information about RAF deaths in Rhodesia, is the RAF personnel who died in Rhodesia while undergoing pilot training during the Second World War. I have completed the data base for those who died in the three training schools at Gwelo: Moffat, Thornhill and Guinea Fowl. I will also be doing Bulawayo and Salisbury.
My objective is also to have an image of every individual's grave headstone. For this I have a colleague in Zimbabwe who takes hi-res photos for me. The data base for Gwelo is frightening. Of the 110 entries, 77% died in flying accidents, unlike earlier conflicts where the principal cause of death was disease. Below is a typical example of the sort of detail I strive for, together with images of the official Death Notice and headstone.
I will try to answer queries members may have. My data bases and libraries are extensive.

Winstanley Harold 1239543 Sgt U/T Pilot RAFVR KOAS 12 March 1943 Died when his plane crashed on Honiton Farm, 1 mile NW of Thornhill Air Station, Gwelo, aged 24. Sgt W. Black was also killed. He was based at Thornhill Air Station, Gwelo. Born in England. Son of William and Gertrude Winstanley, of Borrowash, Derbyshire; husband of Margaret Winstanley, of Sheffield. His brother Douglas also died on service. He is buried in the CWGC Cemetery, Gweru.

    Hello Gerry

Welcome to the Forum - sounds like a great project. I'm sure there will be plenty of queries coming your way.

If I may start, I have four R.A.F. casualties:

Sgt (Pilot) Thomas Howard BURMAN, 997492, 26 E.F.T.S., died April 26th 1944, buried Gweru Cemetery

Sgt (Pilot U/T) William Arthur DENT, 1522988, 20 S.F.T.S, died July 26th 1943, buried Harare (Port Elizabeth) Cemetery

Sgt (Pilot U/T) William Thomas PEVERELL, 1494705, 23 S.F.T.S., died August 6th 1943, buried Bulawayo (Athlone) Cemetery

Sgt (Pilot U/T) Robert Edward Bushell WARREN, 658741, 20 S.F.T.S., died April 7th 1943, buried Harare (Pioneer) Cemetery

Anything you may have on them would be most helpful, and much appreciated

    Regards

    Simon

    Hi Simon

I am struggling to figure out how to insert images from my own PC libraries. I am sure I am just being thick, but when I wish to insert, I get asked for an URL, which is surely not necessary. Headstones and Death Notices are vital sources of information, so I would like to pass these on with any queries I might get. Advice please.

Burman Thomas Howard 997492 Sgt Pilot RAFVR KOAS 26 April 1944 Died when his aircraft crash landed at Larne Landing Ground, Gwelo, aged 27. His trainee pilot LAC Allan Ball was also killed. He was stationed at the Guinea Fowl Air Station, near Gwelo, where he was an elementary flying instructor. Born in England. Son of Thomas and Ethel Douglas Burman, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He is buried in the CWGC Cemetery, Gweru.

    Gerry, welcome to the forum.
One of the more unusual connections is that a number of S Rhodesian Air Force weather forecasters were Commissioned into the RAFVR(Met Branch) - see below. You will note the Service Number similarities. Interrogation of the London Gazette might throw up some other connections. I think most of them reverted to the SRAF after the war. I have no idea where they all served.
