    Default Air Ministry Directive

Would anyone happen to have a copy of (or can point me in the direction of) "Appendix B" of the letter dated 15th January 1941 from WR Freeman to R Peirse which set out the suggested 17 targets for the bombing offensive.

    Regards

    Pete

    Hello Pete,
Can I ask where you saw the Freeman/Peirse letter?

It is in the book "The Strategic Air Offensive against Germany (Volume IV)" but neither of the Appendices are shown

    Hello Pete

These official histories! I see too, it has not printed Appendix A or B, according to footnote 2

Right of Line by John Terraine p.276, gives a bit of very general background about the 17 oil objectives, it seems it was based on an analysis by Portal. I'll have to see my book tomorrow, re footnote 4, but expect it refers to the 15 January 1941 letter you found.

Search of TNA Series 'AIR' + 'Oil' 1940 to 1941 throws up a few possible files re attacks on German oil, which may / may not have the list, or Appendix.

Further to my post 4 what about trying the Cabinet Papers.

Some Cabinet papers are online and some could be downloaded for free

    Hello Pete

Looking at the footnotes on page 740, for page 276 in The Right of Line by John Terraine ...
    1. Roskill, op. cit., p.476
    2. OH (Webster & Frankland), op. cit., i, p.159.
    3. Ibid
    4. Ibid p.162.
    5. AHB/II/117/1(B), p.146.
    6. OH (Webster & Frankland), op. cit., i, p.164.

The 17 targets are referred to again in Volume 1 of the Official History (W & F) between pages 159 to 164.

See page 162 Footnote 1 re the 17 Oil Plants. Then they are listed at the bottom of page 162 in Footnote 1, in Vol I of Webster & Frankland's Official History ... The Strategic Air Offensive ... , published 1961.

Thank you for your comprehensive replies; your efforts are very much appreciated.

Sadly, I don't have volume one in my collection at the moment .... but Christmas is fast approaching ... so it may well be one for my list to Santa.

    Regards
