    Default Sgt(A/G)Benjamin Oldroyd (22) 1084594 214Sqn KIA 21.04.43

    Hello,

Anyone know the circumstances of the above airman's death. I believe they were flying Stirling's at this time.

    Many thanks,

    Rol

    Rol,
Malcolm’s RAFWEB says 214 were flying Stirlings.
    The Registration is:-
Deaths Q2 1943 OLDROYD, Benjamin, 22, Bury St Edmunds, Vol 4a Page 946.
A copy of the Death Certificate will give you the precise Location of Death, and the precise Cause of Death. This latter will certainly give the medical details, but may also have something like “. . . as a result of a Road Traffic Accident.” (or any other cause).

Oldroyd was a rear gunner on a 214 Squadron Stirling that was sent to attack the Heinkel works at Marienehe (Rostock) on April 20/21 1943. They encountered a flak ship on the return trip, the rear turret was hit and Oldroyd was killed. The squadron Medical Officer noted him as being "shot through the head".

"Avenging In The Shadows" quotes the aircraft as being BK800 and the skipper as being a Sgt Gray.

It appears that Benjamin Oldroyd was killed on his first operation. He was on the crew of Sgt. R.C. Gray which was posted into 214 Squadron on April 8 from 1651 HCU and Rostock was the crew's first operation with the Squadron. 4 of the 16 Stirlings 214 Squadron dispatched to Rostock that night landed with dead or wounded on board. Two were rear gunners, both shot in the head, two were pilots who were both shot through the lower left leg. My father's pilot Geoff Shattock was one of them and he had been hit by friendly fire from a Stirling as they approached the target. Oldroyd was the only fatality of the four.
