Default Bombings of Donges refinery, close to St. Nazaire, 23/24 and 24/25 July 1944

    Hello,

The Donges refinery was bombed during 2 consecutive nights (23/24 and 24/25 July 1944) by RAF N5, N6 and N8 Bomb Groups.

    My question is :

    - which Bomb Squadrons and which number of aircraft per Squadron were involved in these operations ?

    Thanks in advance

    Pierre

    For 8 Group:

23/24: Instructions in Form B968; 5 Mosquitos and 14 Lancasters (2 Mosquito aborted)
25/26: Instructions in Form B976; 5 Mosquitos (1 Mosquito aborted)

I am not sure which squadrons were involved, but I can't see any involvement from the squadrons based at RAF Graveley

    Regards

    Pete

On the 23rd-24th there were 3 Oboe Mosquitos from 105 Squadron and 2 from 109 Squadron doing the primary marking followed by 14 Lancasters from 156 Squadron. The main force was composed of 100 Halifaxes from 6 Group (15/424, 14/426, 15/427, 14/429, 14/431, 14/433 & 14/434 Squadrons). H-hour was 00:40.
On the 24th-25th there were 3 Mosquitos from 109 Squadron and 2 from 105 Squadron. H-hour was 01:35. There were also 104 Lancasters and 4 Mosquitos from 5 Group dispatched to this target. (13/52 Base, 37/53 Base, 9/106 Sqn, 20/55 Base - The FORM B uses the 5 Group numbers above, the Night Raid Report shows 104 Lancasters and 4 Mosquitos from 5 Group participating).
