    Default Two RAF Chaplains

    Hi guys

I've been asked to post the following query by a prospective member.

"At the outbreak of World War Two Father John Capistran Moran and Father Camillus (probably Arthur) Grugeon from the Gorton Monastery Manchester went into the RAF as chaplains"

I've looked at the LG and I found the following:

    CHAPLAINS BRANCH.
The undermentioned are granted commissions for the duration of hostilities with the relative rank of Squadron Leader, 11th Dec. 1939:
The Rev. John Capistran Moran (76555)
    and
Rev. Joseph GRUDGEON (76547) (the spelling was later corrected to the above Grugeon)

We believe that Joseph may have been his 'real' name and that Camillus may have been taken whilst at the Monastery. He is shown in the 1954 list as leaving with the rank of S/L - so he wasn't promoted during the war. I don't think Moran was either (though there is a LG error for his entry for 1954)

Has anyone come across either in their ORBs or other Station documents?

    cheers

    A

    Hi Amrit

You may have noticed I posted a query a few days ago regarding what an "O.D. Chaplain" was and Rob Phillips suggested I e-mail the Chaplains Branch and ask them. I did so, and received an answer back in less than 48 hours. I didn't actually give my man's full name, as it wasn't relevant to the query, but they used his full name in the reply and stated his relegion and when he served. As such, I suspect they have access to records of their chaplains, so you might like to write to them, too.

The lady who replied to me, referred to internally as "the historical guru" amongst them, is:

    Reverend (Squadron Leader) Eleanor Rance
    Staff Chaplain
    Chaplaincy Services (RAF)
    Mil: 95221 6264
    BT: 01494 496264
    E-mail: eleanor.rance356@mod.uk
    Internal: AIR Chap-Staff

    Hope this helps

Thank you Steve, that's great advice and I shall pass it on.
