    Default 11 SFTS Shywell ?

    Hi,

I am looking after an airfield with the name Shywell. One Free French posted to this "11 SFTS Shywell" in August 1941.

Could it be a satellite airfield of RAF Shawbury or a mispelling ?

    TIA

    Bertrand, could it be Sywell?

Why not Simon and this archive gives a bad mix of n6 EFTS of Sywell with 11 SFTS of Shawbury for a new airfield of Shywell....

    Bertrand (et al),
Malcolm’s RAFWEB only lists No 6 Elementary Flying Training School (3 Sep 1939 - 12 May 1947) as being at Sywell during the period. Sturtevant, on the other hand, lists an 11 FTS which became 11 SFTS on 3 Sep 1939 at Shawbury (but subsequently moved around to number of Stations - none of which look/sound like “Shywell”).

There is no such place in the Ordnance Survey gazetteer of places, it looks like Sywell and a mix up between two units.

Thanks Alan (and al). Your conclusions lead to an airfield that does not exist !

There are separately one unit to another in Sywell and Shawbury. Shyweel exists in the imagination of the diarist who is not an English man.
