    Default RAF Night fighter victory.

    Hi All,

The lady who lives across the road from me is German and was married to a German Pilot Ofw George Rosler who was shot down with his crew on the night of 23/24 April 1944 while flying JU188A-2 of 1/KG2 U5+LH Wnr 180419. All five of the crew are listed as missing. They were on a bombing mission to Bristol. Does anyone have any ideas on who may have shot them down.

    Regards,

    John.

    Hi John,

just a start.....Mike Bowyer s book on the Mosquito lists claims from

    125 Sqn HK535
    125 Sqn HK299
125 Sqn HK301 ......all Mosquito XVII.......all unidentified and claimed off "S W Coast" which would tie up with all the crew being missing.

Also 456 Sqn HK317 claimed a Ju 88 in sea near Swanage.

One of the 125 Sqn kills was according to Ian White's history of night fighter radar a Mosquito XVII flown by Sqn Ldr E G Barwell and Flt Lt D Haige and identifies it as a Ju 88A-14 of 4/KG 30, so thats one out of the frame. According to Aces High his Mosquito was HK355 and the Ju 88 crashed 4 miles south of Melksham. This serial is at odds with the above list but HK535 was I believe a Lancaster so I guess Mike Bowyer HK535 is a typo.

Anyone have the relevant 125 San ORB?

    regards Peter

    Hi John,

Further to last have had quick trawl through Chris Shores "Those Other Eagles" with a few results for 23/24 April

F/O William Alfred Beadle 173322 125 Sqn Ju 188 claim

    W/C Leonard William George Gill 70244 125 Sqn ju88 damaged, Mosquito XVII HK325. Nav F/O D C Hutchinson 158599

Flt/Lt Richard William Leggett 122820 125 Sqn Ju 88 damaged, Mosquito XVII HK247. Later upgraded when wreckage found 12 miles north west of Poole. Nav F/O R J Midlane.

Sqn/Ldr Vernon Percy Keg 84929 125 Sqn Ju 188 south of Isle of Wight, Mosquito XVII HK299. Nav Flt/Lt A C Crouch. Notes say possibly Ju 88 of 5/KG 6 or 1/KG 54, but then says a Ju 188 of 1/KG 2 shotdown on this date but by Anti Aircraft fire.

Internet source gives this as wr 180414 U5+GH Ju 188E-2 of 1/KG 2 which crashed at Salterns Wood, Arne. All 5 crew killed.

    Good luck
    Peter

    HI Peter,

Many thanks for the information. She is an intresting lady, she was engaged to a member of the Waffen SS before he went missing in Russia, then married to a pilot before he was killed and finally married a Polish Officer captured in 1939, they then moved out here to Australia, still going at 94.

    Regards,

    John.
