Default Can I be certain which Nachtjaeger shot down Lancaster W5008?

    Hello everyone,

This line of research is all very new to me, so please bear with me if I ask some ridiculous questions.

Lancaster W5008 (57 Sqn) crashed 30km NNW of Nuernberg (Nuremberg) in the early hours of 28th August 1943; one of the 11 Lancasters lost that night. Interestingly, I can only account for 5 of them in the Bomber Command Loss Cards.

The OKL confirmed that 5 Lancasters and 7 unspecified four-engined aircraft were shot down at various locations up to 30km from Nuernberg.

The problem is that three or four Lancasters crashed nearly 70km NW of the city in the Steigerwald; the crash of DV187 near Michelau is well documented.

Is there actually any way of knowing which of the 12 'claims' was W5008?

    Hi Alain,

Thank you for the information. However, to my great surprise, even though I did not write to him I have received an email directly from Theo with updated information. Apparently, an unknown type of a/c was coned by FlaK searchlight units at 02:12 west of Zeckern at 5000m. Identified as W5008, the victory at 02:13 was credited to Reschke. Oberleutnant Ertel's 02:15 claim was discounted.

W5008 came down about 1km NW of Zeckern.
