After joining the RAF in August 1940, John Whelan trained as an Observer and as Flight Sergeant, Service No:1376153 with 221 squadron, he served in Coastal Command and later in North Africa as a navigator of a Wellington bomber.

Records that on Sunday 6 December 1942: 221 Squadron sent out three ASV Wellingtons to search for shipping off Tripoli, but nothing was seen; one Wellington failed to return.

He is remembered on Column 250 of the Alemain Memorial.
