    Phill,

l believe Shanks was flying No.124 Sqn Spitfire VI BR575 (not BR588), on 19-8-1942.

It would appear that Shanks was flying Spitfire BR588 During Operation Jubilee (Dieppe ) 19/8/42 , according to the 124 Sqd ORB .

    Phill,

Norman Franks, in The Greatest Air Battle Dieppe, 1942 19th August 1942 (50th Anniversary Edition, 1992, p.231), also identifies Shanks' aircraft as: Spitfire Vb [sic] BR588. He appears to have had a change of heart by the time (1998), Fighter Command Losses Vol.2 1942-1943 was published, and identifies Shanks' aircraft as - Vb "?".

The following reference indicates that BR588 had subsequent service with 616 Squadron, and was struck off in April 1945:

    http://www.airhistory.org.uk/spitfire/_prodn%20list.txt

Why BR575? Well, Mk.VI BR575, is recorded in the above reference as serving with 421 Sqn RCAF and missing at Dieppe on 19-8-1942. Indications are, that 421 never operated Mk.VIs, and to the best of my knowledge, did not participate in Operation Jubilee. Then again, it could be a 616 Squadron aircraft, which also operated Mark VIs.

My identification of BR575 as Shanks' aircraft was provisional, pending further research.

Let's see what others have to say.

    OK Col ,

I take your Point , i was only quoting from the 124 Sqd ORB , of course these can be wrong interesting that the ORB also makes no mention of Spitfire Mk VI BR 575 , and also that Shanks previously flew BR 588 on the 17th August 42 , indeed hopefully some one will have more to add

    cheers Phill
