Default Fate of an Airman ?

    Hello,
Have been reading the paperback book " Forgotten Voices of the Blitz And the Battle for Britain" by Joshua Levine.
On page 53 there is a report by F/Lt. George Lerwill of 49 Sqdn.
He recalls a time when a fellow officer , a reserve Intelligence Officer by the name of Thompson was arrested along with a local Vicar by the name of Nye for transmitting to Germany.
He recalls that the Reverend Nye got 5 years imprisonment and that Thompson just disappeared.

What became of this Officer ,would he have received a prison term or execution ?
There are only two Thompson's listed in CWGC site for 49 Sqdn but where would this trator or indeed any others be listed ?

    Thanks
    Alex
PS - some of the stories in the book are enlightening to the happenings of the time.

    Hi Alex,

I think this story is based on something that did happen but perhaps is suffering from a bit of the “send three and fourpence” syndrome.

From a quick look at 1940 newspaper reports two Lincolnshire Vickers were detained under the Defence Regulations. They were the Reverend H.E.B.Nye who was then the Rector of Scampton and the Reverend J.Vivian Thomas vicar of Langton-by-Wragby.

Nye had been a member of the British Union of Fascists but apparently ceased membership on the outbreak of war. He was detained for a total of two months then released back to his ministry.

Not sure if J.V.Thomas is the “Thompson” referred to but I think he could be.

    Hello,
Many thanks for clearing away the fog of memory.
The "Thompson" had it relates used F/Lt. Lerwell's car without his knowledge on a previous occasion to visit Nye who must have already been under observation.
    Thanks all
    Alex
