The Lancashire Evening Post of Wednesday the 9th of January 1946 reports that LAC Charles Gwilliams, aged 42, from 57, Milner Road, Selly Park, Birmingham, was in the process of demobilisation from No. 101 Personnel Dispersal Unit at RAF Kirkham. He had gone out with a number of service personnel for the evening and was returning to the camp along the Kirkham by-pass, Preston - Blackpool Road. The party was struck from behind by a car. A number of individuals were injured, however Charles was the only fatality.
