Default Name of "British Pilot ?" attached to US Fighter Squadron .

    Hello,
Following a thread on the TOCH forum about an RAF Flying Officer attached(?) to the 309th FighterSquadron 31stFighter Group in Italy, November 1943.
Airman's name is reported as SHENBERGER.
I have scanned through the Air Force Lists but cannot find that name at all. Have I missed it ?
If he was not RAF then Commonwealth Forces, how to find Australian, Canadian, South African or NewZealand names as the name doesn't appear in CWGC site or this Forums POW lists.

Many thanks for any guidance .
    Alex

    Hi Alex,

There's a photograph of a Sgt Shenberger at No. 58 OTU:

He doesn't seem to be wearing any title on his shoulder.

    Regards,

    Dave

    Hello Dave,
    Thanks for the link.
Seems he has Sgt stripes on right sleeve and tip of "Wings" can just be seen by the cap of the airman in the row below.
Do you know what year this pic was taken ?

    Thanks
    Alex

    Unfortunately not, Alex.

The webmaster of the site is a member here. I am sure he would have further details on when P/O Krajewski was at Grangemouth.

There is just one marriage in the UK with that surname. A "Reuben Shenberger" married Constance Headlam, at Weston super Mare, March 1945 Qtr. Daughter born in the Dec 1945 Qtr.

But his grave marker doesn't indicate a flying career. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg...GRid=170695134

The Picture from 58 OTU show course 32A which started 6th February 1943.

C.J. Shenberger (a Canadian) joined 249 Squadron in June 1943.

    Hello,

From Brian Cull's, 249 At War:

p.166/ During the month (June 1943), the squadron had received a number of new pilots: Fg Offs L.W. Humphrey RCAF and A.R Speare; Flt Sgt V.H.Twomey and Sgts K.L. Dale RCAF, C.J. Shenberger RCAF, J.A. Felton RCAF, W. Docherty, J.D. Sheeran, R.W. Kimmings and J.S. Simmons.

p.170/ On 27 September (1943), the Squadron moved from Qrendi to Hal Far and was advised of imminent movement to a new base in southern Italy. There was a further change of personnel, five Canadian pilots - Flg Off Foulbert, Plt Off Gray and Sgts Felton, Houghton and Shenberger - departing, their replacements in the guise of Flg Offs J.W. Brooks DFM, RCAF and R.G.F. Chase. Plt Off A.J. Sykes RNZAF, Wt Off P.V. Waddell RAAF and Flt Sgt J.G. Belec, arriving a few days later.

    See:
    249 At War.
    Cull,Brian.
    London:Grub Street,1997.
    pp.166 & 170

    Hello Gentlemen,

Many thanks for all your help.
As an RCAF man, no wonder I could not find him in the RAF lists.
Also 249 at War, yet another book not on my shelves.
    Again many thanks,

Have just looked on the Canadian Virtual site and No Shenberger listed, so he must have survived the war ?
The reference that he was lost to the 309th Fighter Squadron,31st FG on the 24/11/43 must therefore mean that he left the squadron to serve elsewhere ?

Hi Alex - you may already have seen this extract.
    From a web archive
    http://web.archive.org/web/200707222...e/spitops.html

    originally from...http://www.star-games.com/exhibits/s...e/spitops.html

There were also four losses: Lieutenant Frost of the 308 FS on 5 November; Lieutenant Mann of the 307 FS on 18 November; Lieutenant Van Natta on the l9th; and Flying Officer Shenberger, a British pilot with the 309 FS. on 24 November
Given his surname could he have been of American origin ?

    Hello All,
For details see armyairforces.com site and, TOCH forum.
This pilots initials were in fact G J and not as previously thought C J.
An American who had joined the RCAF, and served in RAFSquadrons, but perhaps ( as did other American 's in RAF service ) transfers to the USAAF or was attached to the 31FG.
Many thanks to you all for helping solve this question

    Hello,
Oh why didn't I look in "Spitfire International" first ?
    Page 457,column 1, 24/11/43
    "31st FG, 309th FS ( WT-Z ), spun in Pomigliano ( 2Lt Shenberger killed ).

So Spitfire coded "WT-Z", Squadron code was "WZ" so "WT" a missprint ?
Perhaps "WZ-Z" or even "WZ-T" ? any hope of serial number?
