Yes, I think you are right. His place of death is listed as RAF Henlow so I think it must have been a (non-flying) accident or a death from natural causes.

Thanks to all for the help. I have just been forwarded his death certificate and it appears he died from Ventricular Fibrillation and other complications. Ventricular Fibrillation is a heart rhythm problem that occurs when the heart beats with rapid, erratic electrical impulses. This causes pumping chambers in your heart (the ventricles) to quiver uselessly, instead of pumping blood. Sounds like he was not involved in an air crash but died of natural causes.
