Can't help with how he died, but he had previously been injured in the loss of Whitley V T4223 YG-G in February 1941:

There is a photograph of him and his wife outside the church on their wedding day in 'The Bystander' of October 2nd 1940, with the following caption:

    Holdsworth - Zvegintzov
Pilot Officer Richard William Gilbert Holdsworth, R.A.F.V.R., only son of Professor Sir William and Lady Holdsworth, of Grandpont House, Folly Bridge, Oxford, and an Oxford rowing Blue, and Mary Zvegintzov, daughter of the late Col Alexander Zvegintzov, and Mrs. Zvegintzov, were married at St. Peter's-in-the-East, Oxford.

The Hull Daily Mail of May 4th 1942 reported his death:

    Reported Killed
Flight-Lieutenant R. W. G. Holdsworth, reported killed on active service, stroked the Oxford crew in the boat race in 1931 and 1933, and rowed in the 1934 race. He was the only son of Professor Sir William Holdsworth.

    Regards

    Simon
