    Default Aircrew Trades.

    Hello. In researching 422 and 423 RCAF Squadrons flying Sunderlands, all crews contain the following trades.

    WOM, FME/AG, FMA/AG. Just wondering what they are. I get the air gunner part.

    Thanks, Richard

    Hi Richard

    WOM = Wireless Operator Mechanic
    FME = Flight Mechanic Engines
    FMA = Flight Mechanic Airframes

    They were not technically aircrew but ground crew carried to deal with repairs during long flights and given extra training as AGs. The situation was unique to Flying boats, I believe.

    And often referred to (in a general, or collective sense) as tradesmen air gunners. A WOM is a Wireless Operator also cross qualified to carry out repairs on said equipment, a bit like the trade of tuck driver (mechanic).

    Does a "tuck driver (mechanic)" also work in the galley :-)

    Thanks all for your input. It seems, the RCAF aircrew, when commissioned were either an Air gunner, or Wireless Op.
