    Default RAF 61 Squadron 1943

    Hi
I'm researching RAFV Flt Lieutenant DAVID LATIMER COURT THOMAS who in Oct 1943 was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with 61 Squadron. Although he was born (in 1922) and brought up in Lee, southeast London, it appears that he had his training in Canada accirding to the newspaper entries at the time (David LC THOMAS, 61 Squadron, Ft Lt list him, living in Dumfriesshire.) The London Gazette entry gives his full name and his DFC and was published just two days after the newspaper reports. My question is, this must be the same chap? No other David LC Thomases are found. And also, would the 61 Squadron have moved from Essex to Dumfriesshire (presumably RAF Dumfries) in 1943?
David was killed in action in northern Germany in 1944.
    Many thanks
    Nige

    Nigel,
It is the same chap, but the address is most probably that of his family home, as 61sqdn had no connection to Essex or Dumfriesshire. The squadron was to and fro Syerston, Skellingthorpe and a short stay at Coningsby around the time in question.

Thanks. Hm, his family were from south London - none of the family were from Scotland, so it is a bit odd.

Hi Nigel - you might check whether he was posted to Dumfriesshire at any stage as a pupil or instructor (many Navigators and Bomb Aimers trained there). Was the DFC awarded when he was with 61 Squadron? The following links may be of interest:

He was with 61sqdn from 29th March 43 until 18th Sept 43, his DFC was put forward during his time with the squadron, and was "approved" in October 43.
