Default RAF Bomber landing with bomb load at East Wretham on 15.10.41

    Hi all,

I would like to ask if anybody might be help me by chance to identify a RAF bomber which according to one diary has landed with full bomb load at East Wretham during the night 15.-16.10.1941 and was not of 311 Squadron.

    TIA

    Pavel, Hi,

No answers I'm afraid, only circumstantial evidence, but the weather over-night 15/16 Oct 41 in that area was a WSW/SW wind F2-3. Good Vis, and scattered cloud at 2500 ft AGL.

No runway at E Wretham, so the Night Tee could have been orientated SW (although that is one of the shortest distances at E Wretham). This would have meant an approach over the villages of Great Hockham, and Wretham.

However!!!! 13 nm further on from E Wretham on the very same heading is Mildenhall!!

I would bet some of your money that if this happened then the culprit is likely to have been from Mildenhall. But what was he doing retaining a full bomb-load? Should have got rid of it over enemy territory (or the N Sea). If he couldn’t get rid of it then he might have been shot up? Mildenhall sqns ORBs might give you a clue???
