Default 520649 F/Sgt Ernest Frederick Richard KEEPER RAF

    Hello,

520649 F/Sgt Ernest Frederick Richard KEEPER RAF, died of wounds received in action on 9-10-1942. He is buried in Diego Garcia War Cemetery, Madagascar. Could someone with access to the GRO RAF War Deaths, take a look and tell me what, if any, unit is mentioned against his name?

    Thanks,

    Col.

    Hi Col

He's listed as being with 1433 Flight. A bit of info here:

    And here (from RAFWEB):-
He died from wounds sustained whilst flying in a Lysander of No 1433 Flt, which was forced down by ground fire during operations in Madagascar.

    Simon/Peter,

Thanks for that! I strongly suspected Keeper's unit was No.1433 Flight. Apparently his was the only death suffered by the unit during Operation 'Ironclad'. 1433 Flt operated the following Lysander IIIA's:

    V9305 - 225/4/1433 Flt. SOC 27.7.44.
    V9328 - 1 SAC/41 OTU/1492 Flt/2/1433 Flt/Med. SOC 6.45.
    V9350 - 10 Grp AACF/ASR Flt/Roborough/276/1433 Flt - ? -.
    V9359 - 8 AACU/1433 Flt. SOC 25.1.45.
    V9485 - 4/1433 Flt. SOC 27.7.44.
V9499 - 225/1433 Flt - Engine lost power; hit ant hill in forced landing and undercarriage collapsed, Betooku, Madagascar, 8.3.43
    V9593 - 225/6/13/4/1433 Flt. SOC 30.9.43.
    V9606 - 4/1433 Flt -SOC 27.7.44.
    V9728 - 41 OTU/1433 Flt. - ? -.

    See: RAF Aircraft T1000-V9999/Halley/A-B(1997)/142-7.

Two other Lysanders (V9514 and V9617), were destined for Madagascar but were lost en route in S.S. 'Meliskirk', on 24-11-1942.
