    Default Air Ministry Communiques

Does anyone know if there is a listing which shows the dates of each of the Air Ministry Communiques?

I have them recorded in Flight, so I can find the reporting of individual airmen, but Flight does not show the date the communique was issued.

    Any thoughts / advice?

    Regards

    Hi Pete

did you create an index of Communique No. versus date of publication in Flight?

I still have the edited 6 monthly Flight extracts online at this link:

    Dennis

I haven't created an index at this stage; I am just recording the Communique Number and the Flight date on the relevant loss pages for No. 35 Squadron personnel at the moment.

Although I am recording all the details, I am primarily interested in when "death was presumed (for administrative purposes)". To this end, I am trying to understand the relationship between when death was presumed, when the communique was published and then when Flight published it.

Are there any other online resources that provide access to the AM Communiques (other than Flight).

The reason I ask is that I can't find some entries using the Flight search facility but I don't know if the entry was never recorded or whether the search facility isn't finding it. Examples are when an entry says "previously reported" but the "previous report" is not there.

I managed to put this index together, if it is of use to anyone. It shows the Communique No and the date that it was issued by the Air Ministry.

There are some gaps, but it is a pretty good start point and meets my current needs.

    Good man Pete,

when you say above, "date that it was issued by the Air Ministry", what is your source for that date? is that the date of a newspaper appearance or from an actual AM press release.

    Hello,

From, "The Times", Wednesday, September 20, 1939:

FIRST CASUALTY LIST - MISSING AIRMEN.

The first casualty list of the war was issued last night, when the Air Ministry announced the following casualties in the Royal Air Force on various dates (names listed) ...

The dailies give a better indication of the true issue date, rather than periodicals such as Flight, and The Aeroplane (unless they actually quote the date of issue by the AM, ie yesterday, last night etc).

I utilised the newspaper archive, which as Col. says, shows "issued today" or "published yesterday", so they should be the actual dates of issue.

I have compared a couple of the dates to the ones that I got using "Flight" archives and found that "Flight" was about a week later.

    Hope that helps

    Pete,

The "Royal Air Force Quarterly" reprinted these communiques from the outset. Whilst at IAM Farnborough some years ago I photocopied the first 67 of these and I could have sworn that I threw them out on one of my many Service moves, but to my surprise came across them this afternoon during one of my weed-outs. I am not sure why I stopped at No. 67 unless, and it is possible, that the publication of such in the RAF Quarterly had stopped. These certainly fill in the missing dates. I am prepared to part with them for the cost of the postage - can't get much cheaper than that!

    Jim
