    Default 561504 Sgt. R.E. Clayton, 53 Squadron 1939-1940.

    Hello,

I have been trying unsuccessfully for several years to find the Christian names of 561504 Sgt. R. E. Clayton, an Observer with 53 Squadron in France and England. He served with 53 Squadron from at least September 1939 to August 1940. He was slightly wounded at least twice during his many operational missions. He survived the war, was not commissioned or decorated. So he does not appear on the CWGC, London Gazette or FLIGHT Archive websites. His AIR 78 name card only gives his initials ! He does not appear in any POW list. I have seen his service number once recorded as '561507' but this is incorrect.

He was at least deserving of some decoration and most observers who survived 1940 were eventually commissioned.

Can anyone please identify him ? Maybe in the future a relative of his may spot this post !

    Regards,

    Martin Gleeson.

    Martin,

561504 is in the Block 560001-579999 (Aircraft Apprentices).
Allocation Start Date 1 Jan 1926?
Allocation End Date either 3 Sep 1939 (outbreak of WW2), or 31 Jul 1944?
This means yr man possibly became A Number between 11 Jan 1927 and 26 May 1927?
Aircraft Apprentices had, in 1927, to be aged 15 17.5 years.
Thus his DoB might lie between 1910 and 1912?

    You can have (in E&W):-
    Ronald E Clayton, b.Q3 1910 (Reg Kingston 2a 412)
    Reginald E Clayton, b Q3 1911 (Reg Islington 1b 615)
    Robert E Clayton, b.Q2 1912 (Reg Walsall 6b 1460)

    HTH
    Peter Davies

So we now need to eliminate...

    Ronald Edward Clayton, b.Q3 1910 (Reg Kingston 2a 412)
    Reginald Ernest Clayton, b Q3 1911 (Reg Islington 1b 615)
    Robert Eli Clayton, b.Q2 1912 (Reg Walsall 6b 1460)

    Peter,

Thanks for that information. When finally identified (hopefully) I expect he will prove to be one of your three.

    Paul,

Again thanks. I had him as James Nelson, but as an 'AC2' based on the 1939 reports in the AIR 81/29 Casualty file.

    Regards,

    Martin.
