    Hello,

    AUSTRALIA.

408161 W/O Donald William BEATTIE RAAF.

AUS408161 Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr) Donald William BEATTIE RAAF, was severely wounded in the head whilst on operations to Mainz, on 11/12-8-1942. His No.150 Squadron Wellington III X3744*, had been hit by flak and later was attacked by a nightfighter, killing the rear gunner (AUS406589 F/Sgt Paton BELL RAAF), and wounding Beattie, The Wellington made it back to Coltishall, where it crash-landed. Beattie slowly recovered from his wounds and was eventually repatriated to Australia. He was discharged from the RAAF on 25 December, 1944, and died in Melbourne on 16 March, 1946, he was buried in his home-state (Tasmania). His death was deemed attributable to war service.

    * Bill Chorley, in BCL3/179, does not identify the following crew of Wellington X3744 as members of the RAAF - AUS408161 Sgt D W BEATTIE, AUS403718 Sgt C CHAPMAN and AUS403378 F/Sgt A V RITCHIE. The pilot of X3744, 112298 P/O Roy Charles MUNSON RAFVR, was awarded a DFC for his efforts - https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...upplement/3861
