Default turret on Wellington III X3718

    Hi,

Wellington III X3718 belonged to 9. Squadron around August 1942. I have read that early Wellington IIIs had FN.4A turrets and later IIIs had FN.120 turrets. Is there a way to find out which turret this particular a/c had?

    Thanks.

    Best

    Hello Marcel,

If I remember correctly what I have read, early Wellington III (and Lancaster) were equipped with a four-gun F.N.20 rear turret, while later aircraft had F.N.120 which featured a simplified structure. The change over between F.N.20 and F.N.120 was made around spring 1943 at least on first-line bombers (Wellington and Lancaster). Therefore, I am reasonably confident that X3718 in August 1942 had an F.N.20.

    Best wishes,

    Jérémie
