    Default John William COALES (1806859)

Does anyone have any information on the death of John William COALES (1806859) on 27th June 1946. He is listed as No. 35 Squadron on the CWGC site (buried Hanover) but the squadron were preparing for the Goodwill Tour on that date, so I think it may be an error.

    Regards

    Pete

1806859 John W Coales is listed as being with 3 Squadron in the R.A.F. Deaths Overseas database, rather than 35 Sqn.

    Cross-checking that with Halley's 'Broken Wings' (page 45) there is a 3 Sqn Tempest F.5 SN222, crashed Schwagstorf, B.Z.G.

Cross-checking that with Thomas and Stores' 'Typhoon and Tempest Story', page 216, SN222 - F/S J W Coates [sic], crashed in bad weather, Schwagstorf.

SN222 was at one time 'le Grand Charles' of Pierre Closterman.

    Thanks Simon

I will pass that information to the CWGC so that the entry can be corrected.

Both of the two scanned documents on his CWGC entry (Graves Registration Report and Cemetery Register) have 35 Squadron, which presumably is where they got that information from:

I have sent the information you provided and asked them to reconsider the entry. As all the evidence provided is from third parties I don't know whether it is "deemed admissible" ... but I will await the CWGC response.

As anticipated, the CWGC has responded by saying that all its records show that he was with No. 35 Squadron and that any changes must be based on original documents (rather than third party documents).

I have just downloaded the ORB for No. 3 Squadron and it does show the loss in there, so I have passed on this information.

If anyone has any other original documents that might help support the case for correcting the record, please could you get in touch.

    Regards

    Pete

    UPDATE:

The CWGC has confirmed this morning that the No. 3 Squadron ORB showing him listed as a No. 3 Squadron airman and recording his death on 27th June 1946 is sufficient evidence to change its entry.
