Default Sqd Ldr John Charles Roberts 3X Beach Bricks and No. 4 Beach Unit WWII

    Hi all

My first post! I'm researching the war record of my grandfather John Charles Roberts, known as Jack or JC. He served in the RAFVR from 1941 to 1946. Based on his service record I've been able to figure out that much of that time was either with 39 Squadron in Egypt and Malta (Nov '41-May '43) or the Beach Units, first in the Med and then back in the UK for Operation Overlord. He was a supplies and equipment specialist.

In May '43 he joined the "3 Brick Unit" which I think means one of the 3X Beach Bricks RAF Complement units (31-36) formed in the Middle East in mid 1943. I'm trying to work out which of the Bricks he was in. There were 6 of them out there involved in the various landings in Italy in the second half of 1943.

In December '43 he's assigned to No. 68 Beach unit which seems to be at the end of their activities in Italy as they move back to the UK. In early '44 he becomes part of No. 4 RAF Beach Unit and is mentioned as being at Port de Bessin on June 13th 1944 as part of Operation Overlord. In September '44 he's listed as "HQ AEAF" and In February '45 he goes to "SDL" which I think means "Special Duties List" for a couple of months. There is a family story that he went to Holland to help run a town that had been recently liberated but I have no more information on that. After that he's in "87 Wing AD" in Area 2, if I read it correctly and in May '46 he leaves the RAF.

I've already found out quite a bit from Mike Fenton's excellent website on the Beach units but if anyone has any other information that would be gratefully received!

    Thanks

    Steve,

You could try the National Archives which holds quite a few records of Beach Units for Army Navy and RAF. The RAF ones (24 of them) can be found at http://discovery.nationalarchives.go...p=1925&_hb=tna. There isn't a No 4 RAF Beach Unit listed, but there is a No 4 Beach Balloon Detachment; unfortunately that doesn't fit with your parameters. It's best if you look at the list to decide which best fits your research. 68 Beach unit is at http://discovery.nationalarchives.go...ils/r/C7160287 .

These files cannot be downloaded, so it would either mean visiting the NA yourself, hiring a researcher to do it for you, or requesting the NA to digitise ant files of interest for you.

As a PS to the above you might like to look at this archived RAF Commands thread http://www.rafcommands.com/archive/05183.php. Interestingly No 4 RAF Beach Unit is not listed.

As an aside have you searched for RAF Beach Units on the Internet? There are quite a few hits.

Thanks for the tips! I'll have a look at the National Archive material.

Yes, thanks Terry. Some good information in there. That places my grandfather in the D-Day landings which is great to know.
