Default Citation/details for DFM award - 580530 Arthur Gordon Sopwith, December 1940

    Hello everyone

I'm looking for any details about the circumstances behind the D.F.M. awarded to 580530 Sgt. Arthur Gordon Sopwith, of 110 Sqn, gazetted December 1940.

There's nothing further in the award's announcement in Flight Magazine on January 2nd 1941, page 18, nor in any of the contemporary newspaper reports - which by the way all report his surname as 'Sopwich' for some reason.

    Many thanks,

    Simon

    Simon,

SOPWITH, Arthur Gordon. 580530 Sergeant, 110 Sqn.

    L.G. 24th December, 1940. Air Observer. Air2/9327.

Sergeant Sopwith has now completed 32 operational sorties by day and night since he joined his squadron last May. During the late phases of the enemy invasion of the Low Countries, he proved himself to be a courageous and able Navigator. He has continued to carry out good work and by his energy and devotion to duty has set a good example to the other members of his squadron. I recommend the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.

    Tavender/DFM Register/II/K-Z/703-4.

Also: DFC - 226 Sqn. 47587 F/L Arthur Gordon SOPWITH DFM, RAF, LG: 25-7-1944. p.3466.

This officer continues to display a high degree of courage, skill and resolution, qualities which earned him an award of the Distinguished Flying Medal earlier in his operational career. He has taken part in many sorties, guiding his pilot to dangerous and difficult sorties with unerring skill. His fine work has played a good part in the successes obtained.

    Carter & Carter/DFC/II/M-Z/1570.
