Default 502 Squadron Whitley YG-M, April 1942 - serial number?

    Hello everyone

Not sure if this will be possible, but I'm after the serial of 502 Sqn Whitley GR.VII YG-M, which attacked U-590 on April 14th 1942, some 400km WbN of Brest. The ORB Forms 540 and 541 unhelpfully just lists the aircraft's code letter M, but no serial.

So, is there a way to track down the serial for YG-M...?

    Regards

    Simon

    Simon,

Nothing definite. A-B's Whitley File (p.70), lists two 502 Sqn a/c as "M". the first (P5050), can be eliminated, as it was lost on 4-2-1942. The other possibility is; Z9372:YG-M (a Mk.VII), which was lost on 2-1-1943.

Thank you very much indeed Col.

I'd already come across P5050, but as you say that can be eliminated. Z9372 sounds more promising...

TBH I didn't realise there was a serial/code letter section at the back of the Whitley File, so thanks for the pointer - learn something new every day!

    Regards
