Hi according to this site: http://sas.raf38group.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1957
Sgt. Frederick Noakes, 902559 (believed to have joined the RAFVR at some point after Sept 1939). Flying in Wellington L7809 of 38 Sqn on 11/12 Sept 1940, his aircraft crashed near Ostend with the loss of all the crew.

    Needs verification.

    Hello Pavel,

    Thank you.
Your reply agree's with the entry in AB's "L1000-N9999".
Oddly Chorley "BCL vol1 revised does not give a serial number .

    Hello,
I have just come across this thread whilst researching Wellington L7809 and trying to resolve two different AIR81 reports for the same aircraft.
The 38 Squadron ORB records the Wellington lost on 12/13.9.40 as L3237, with the same crew details as already posted. The location is just quoted as 'Belgian territory'.
AIR81/3920 records L7809 as shot down 24.10.40 Kohlen, Germany.
The 38 Squadron ORB shows L7809 on active operations up to 1.10.40, but has no further entries for October 1940, as they were preparing to move to Egypt.
It looks as though the error comes from AIR81/3221 which records the aircraft involved in the 12/13.9.40 crash as L7809.
Hopefully, this resolves the Wellingtons involved in the two crashes.
    Kind regards, Alan

    Hello,
There's a slight error in my previous post, as the September crash should read 11/12.9.40, not 12/13.9.40.
    The aircraft is still L3237.
    Apologies, Alan

    Hello,
Another apology as L3237 is not a Wellington serial, as I've just found out.
However, the 38 Squadron ORB clearly shows this serial - further investigation needed!
However, to confirm that L7809 was still on operations up to 1.10.40, so wasn't the aircraft that crashed on 11/12.9.40.
    Kind Regards,
    Alan

    Hello Alan,
Thank you for reviving this thread.

You are correct about L3237 as Air Brit L1000-N9999 has that serial number as being a Hart Trainer, contract that was cancelled..

However it does have L7809 as a 38 Sqn a/c Shot down near Ostend Railway Station, returning from Koblenz 12.9.40.

BCL vol1 has only the a/c squadron code and a/c in squadron letter "HD-R".

At the time of posting the first post in this thread I had not seen 38's ORB, so will look soon if only to satisfy my curiosity.

May I offer a/c 'number 3237 or 7809 as possibilities.

I believe the Wellington could be R3237. It is recorded in the F541 earlier in the month
