    Default Interception/Tactic Reports Air14/3377

    Hi,

These reports on the various tactic and interceptions carried out by the GAF are rather detailed. Was the information in these reports compiled from details via ULTRA at Bletchley or standard intelligence gathering by RAF sources.

    TIA

    Hi Steve,

ULTRA was not directly included in the Interception Tactics Reports. Instead, the data was gained by the British "Y" Service monitoring German R/T and W/T radio traffic, and analysed against existing intelligence data on Luftwaffe unit locations, callsigns etc.

Of course, ULTRA and other intelligence enabled the compilation of the background data required to effectively analyse the intercepted radio traffic. For example, A.I.4(f) maintained a 'dictionary' throughout the war called the German Fighter codebook, and ULTRA enabled the compilation of Luftwaffe orders of battle.

    Cheers

    Rod

PS - as an aside, the Air Ministry publication, "The Rise and Fall of the German Air Force", published in 1948, does include information from ULTRA sources, although this isn't directly acknowledged in the book. I base this on a number of paragraphs in the book that read practically word-for-word against the paraphrased ULTRA messages disseminated to Allied Commands.
