Good Evening,
I am new to this forum and was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to help. I recently acquired my great uncle's incomplete RAF service record from the MoD and have managed to extract the following information

Official Number(s): 1338059, 191836
Name: John Thomas
Date of Birth: 16 Feb 1913
Date of Enlistment: 23 May 1941
Date of Discharge: 20 Feb 1945 Cause: On appointment to temporary commission ?
Dates of Commission: Flying Officer (21 Aug 1945), Pilot Officer (21 Feb 1945)
Awarded DFC: 25 Sep 1945 (no citation or reason included)

I know that my relative served as a Navigator in 640 Squadron RAF Bomber Command as the service papers record the following:

640 Sqdn 4/9/44
Beverley Base 15/1/45
Discharged 24/1/45
43 Base, N.E. 15/1/45
640 Sqdn
Discharged RAF on app. to commission 20/2/45
640 Sqdn 21/2/45
10 O.T.U. 6/4/45

The above is very confusing to me. Does it suggest that he served with 640 Squadron from 4 Sep 44 up until 20 Feb 45, received his commission as Pilot Officer on 21 Feb 45 and then commenced his service with the squadron until 4 April 45?

Since this was the only squadron he served with during the war I would love to find out exactly what he did during his time with 640 Squadron, how many missions and where.

If anyone can shed any light on this I would be most grateful.

Kind regards,
