Default 406 RCAF Air Stores Park

    Hello,

My Grandfather served with 406 RCAF ASP and arrived in England at #3 PRC in Bournemouth.

I am searching for specific operating locations for 406 ASP in England and as it moved to France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

My end goal is to travel to where he went during the war and add this documentation to his service record history.

I have discovered a National Archives file reference for 406 ASP and now am looking for suggestions for other sources of information. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Hello

I wasn't sure when you said National Archives if you meant Kew, London or Library and Archives Canada, however in case here's a link to the latters archive which hosts a digital version of the units records (ORB)http://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/oo...9/1116?r=0&s=3 This should take you to the first page.

    Kind regards
    Pierre

    Hi

I have a few mentions of 406 ASP in my History of 41 Sqn, "Blood, Sweat and Valour" (Fonthill, 2012), as they were both in the same Wing in Germany in April and May 1945:

    B.118 Celle, 26 April 1945
    Squadrons: 41, 130 and 350 Squadrons (125 Wing)
    Servicing Unit: 6041, 6132 and 6350 SEs
Repair & Salvage Unit: 409 RSU (Detachment with 39 Wing)
Refuelling & Rearming Unit: Headquarters and A Section, 426 RRU
Forward Staging Post: 91 FSP (46 Group)
Staging Post: 19 SP (46 Group)
    Air Liaison Unit: 361 ALS
Stores Supply: 401, 404 and 406 (RCAF) ASPs
Hospital Unit: 50 Mobile Field Hospital
Medical Unit: B Flight, 1 CAEU (2 Group)
    Dental Unit: 108 MDS
RAF Regiment: 2875 and 2876 Squadrons
    Signals Units: 61 Wing Signals Section, and 511G (50 MFH), 591C (404 ASP), 5419J (125 Wg.), 5343D (91 FSP), 5348D (91 FSP), 5352P (91 FSP) & 55064 CB (125 Wg.) MSUs
    Personnel Transit Centre: 13 PTC

[Note re the ASPs: 125 Wing drew their stores from 401 ASP, which was based at B.116 Wunstorf; 409 RSU, 91 FSP, 19 SP and the two RAF Regiment squadrons drew theirs from 404 ASP, which was based at B.118 Celle; 50 MFH and 426 RRU drew theirs from 406 (RCAF) ASP, which was based at B.150 Hustedt]

    B.118 Celle, 7 May 1945
    Wing: 125 Wing
    Squadrons: 41, 130, 137, 414 (RCAF) and 486 (RNZAF) Squadrons
    Servicing Unit: 6041, 6132, 6137, 6404 and 6486 SEs
Forward Staging Post: 91 FSP (46 Group)
Staging Post: 19 SP (46 Group)
    Air Liaison Unit: 361 ALS
Stores Supply: 401, 404 and 406 (RCAF) ASPs
Hospital Unit: 50 Mobile Field Hospital
Medical Unit: B Flight, 1 CAEU (2 Group)
    Dental Unit: 108 MDS
    Signals Units: 61 Wing Signals Section, and 511G (50 MFH), 5419J (125 Wing), 5343D (91 FSP), 5348D (91 FSP), 5352P (91 FSP) & 55064 CB (125 Wing) MSUs
    Personnel Transit Centre: 13 PTC

[Note re the ASPs: 125 Wing drew their stores from 401 ASP, which was based at B.116 Wunstorf; 91 FSP and 19 SP drew theirs from 404 ASP, which was based at B.156 Luneberg; 50 MFH drew theirs from 406 (RCAF) ASP, which was based at B.150 Hustedt; 1 CAEU drew their stores from 125 Wing.]

I see from my notes that 406 ASP was with 143 Wing at B.78 Eindhoven, Netherlands, on 18 March 1945, and with 124 Wing at B.106 Twente, Netherlands, on 7 April 1945.

This information (periodic identifications of the locations of various units) was in the 83 Group Appendix for 1945 in TNA AIR 25/707. There is probably more data there if you have the chance/time to go digging, but it wasn't my area of interest, so only have peripheral notes, I'm sorry.

    Hope this helps a little

    Regards
    Steve

    Pierre,

I was referring to the UK National Archives file AIR/29/787/14.
I will certainly check out the Canadian archives link too.

    Cheers

    Steve,

Thank you very much for this info. It matches with the info from the archive file AIR/29/787/14 title page that shows 406 ASP in France June 1944, Belgium September 1944, Holland October 1944, and Germany April 1945.

I'll definitely be doing more digging, lol.

    Cheers,
    Michael

    Hello,

My father (S/L Gordon Burness) was Commanding Officer of 406 ASP and I have a lot of his records from the war, including movement of the unit in England and on the continent. Having retired I am now in the process of going through his records and scanning them. I could email you a copy when I get done. If you give me your grandfather's name I could check if he is mentioned, as I do have some records that list individual names.

    Regards,
    John
