Default 07222 Gp Capt John Alexander McDONALD

    Dear all

Hoping someone might be able to assist me to locate a couple of missing pieces of data in this man's career:

He was born 29 Aug 97 but I don't know the location. Although he died in the UK in 1983, he was buried in Christchurch, New Zealand, which makes me wonder if he was born there. There are no other obvious links.

McDonald appears to have specialised in Sigs, but was also OC 55 Sqn, 1 Feb 35-27 Jan 36. Following 55 Sqn, I have established that he was posted to HQ 11 Group on sigs duties on 23 Jun 37, but I have been unable to find out what he was doing between the Jan 36 and Jun 37. Does anyone have an AFL for the period who might be able to tell me, please?

He was posted to the Directorate of Signals on 26 Jan 38; Wg Cdr, 1 Nov 38, and became a member of the Air Ministry Land Line Committee in 1939, but I have been unable establish his postings between then and Jan 47 when he retired. Can anyone help, please?

Lastly, he was awarded an MiD on 14 Jun 45 and a CBE on 1 Jan 46. However, he was also awarded an AFC between the two, but I cannot establish the date, which should not be difficult to do, under normal circumstances. Can anyone help with this, too, please?

    Thanks
    Steve

    That's excellent, thank you Mojmir!

I don't know how you found it as I couldn't. The second link has also told me he was Stn Cdr at Defford Oct 43-Oct 46, and has given me a lead to follow up with the hope of making contact with his son and potentially accessing data from McDonald's logbook.

    Regards

    My pleasure, Steve,

Here he is a member of the Boeing 247-D-DZ203 “Automatic Landing” team at Defford, England in 1945. (Page 5)
