    Default Confirmation please

    Hello,
Can someone please confirm or correct the following for me ?
Are they RAF or RAFVR ?
    Service Number
    39715 - RAF.
    1320122 - RAFVR.
    1582343 - RAFVR.
    1579910 - RAFVR.
I have the names and just need confirmed if either RAF or RAFVR.
All were POW, but the data list just gives RAF.

    Thanks
    Alex

It was my understanding, Alex, that during World War II, all those called up for Air Force Service with the RAF, both commissioned officers and other ranks, did so as members of the RAFVR under the National Service (Armed Forces) Act 1939 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nation...es%29_Act_1939). As 1320122 joined after Nov 1940 and both 1579910 and 1582343 joined after June 1941, they would have been RAFVR.

    Alex,

338374 et seq all post October 1940, hence RAFVR. The others all appear to be circa 1918, so probably RAF - happy to be corrected.

Thank you, Col. So that seems to mean they duplicate numbers previously issued (at least on my list.)?

Remember that OR Service Numbers, Warrant and Commissioned Officer Personal Numbers were different sequences.

Cranwell Flight Cadets, Halton Brats, AAF,, RAFO, RAF and RAFVR also generally were in out of sequence blocks.

RAF Officer direct entry continued during the War alongside RAFVR hostilities only (the treasury continued to man up to the estimates agreed pre war)

    Hello Col/Brian (and anybody interested)
I have a spreadsheet of RAF/RAFVR Enlisted Numbers culled from various sources. The biggest problems are when (a) a Block of Numbers started to be issued (sometimes at various different places - how did they know?), and (b) when the same Block stopped being issued. This latter difficulty makes using Enlisted Service Numbers as a tool in various researches quite difficult. One has to use assumptions at some stages (I can hear the sharp intakes of breath by the purists from here!) to make it workable.
I have never found an Enlisted duplicate Number (Commissioned Numbers - yes).
Now - I do not wish to become The Expert in this matter. In my case it was sparked off by reading Jim Routledge's paper on the subject in the publication "Medals . . . ." (I can't remember the name, or lay hands on it at the moment). The list - or something similar - then appeared in a website (RAF Deaths??) many, many, years ago.
What I'm driving at is that SOMEBODY needs to take this on and become the repository for the Known Truth Of The Matter. I would love to do it, but I'm a KOS, and of advanced years. No point in me starting all sorts of investigations if I then 'fall off my perch'?
If anybody wants my Numbers Spreadsheet, then they are welcome to it. Just email.
