Default 365236 Sgt Plt (later 45372 Sqn Ldr) Herbert Walter EDWARDS

I appreciate it's always harder to find information on NCO pilots, but I'm posting here in case anyone has record of this pilot anywhere in their files.

Edwards was born in Medway, Kent, on 17 May 1908, but I have not been able to establish when he joined the RAF and when & where he undertook his flying training.

He was posted to 41 Sqn as a Sgt Plt on 23 Jun 31, and remained with the unit until 3 Jan 37, when he was posted to CFS Upavon for a flying instructors' course. He graduated as QFI Class B on 20 Mar 37, but I have no further information on his postings until 1944. I do know that he graduated ECFS as QFI A1 and served with Training Command, 1939-1946. He was commissioned on 28 Feb 41 (sen 19 Feb 41), promoted to Fg Off (WS), 19 Feb 42, and to Flt Lt (WS), 19 Feb 43. Around Feb 44, he was posted to an unidentified SFTS in 24 Group in South Africa, and was awarded an AFC (3,600 FH) as an Actg Sqn Ldr on 1 Jan 46. Edwards was appointed a Flt Lt (ext svce) and transferred to the Aircraft Control Branch on 1 Jan 47 (sen 1 Sep 45), and subsequently to a permanent commission as a Flt Lt in ACB on 15 May 48. He retired 7 May 58, retaining Sqn Ldr, and died in Surrey in Dec 1972.

I would appreciate any information on this pilot, please, but am mainly seeking information on his postings between 1937 and 1958. It would also be good to know when and exactly where he died, and perhaps something of his life between his retirement and his death.

    Many thanks

    Steve,
Father (Ernest Edwards) was a Coy QMS in the RE at Chatham Barracks. Employment in the mid-1920s was scarce in those parts. Eastchurch was only 15 miles away. Making all the assumptions and suppositions I would reckon he Enlisted somewhere shortly after Monday 17 May 1926 - yr man's 18th birthday! If I knew on which date 'They' ceased issuing Numbers in the 363281-370000 Block in the RAF (started 1 Jan 1924) I could have a go at a mathematical Enlistment possible date.
The Death Registration District (Surrey South West) is not much help either - but a copy of the Death Cert would give you the precise Place of Death. Also the Informant (and the Informant's address) might give you some idea of where he was living at Death.
    Best I can do!
