Default RAF and RAFVR aircrew strength 1 September 1939

Can anyone please provide me with the combined RAF and RAFVR aircrew strength at the outbreak of the Second World War?

The best figure I can find is that for the RAFVR on 1 September 1939, shown in Terraine, Right of the Line, p44:

    Pilots 6,646
    Observers 1,623
    Wireless operator/air gunners 1,948
    TOTAL 10,217

I can't find any number for the RAF itself.

I suspect the answer is in the CSO publication "Fighting with Figures: A Statistical Digest of the Second World War". I've ordered a copy online but it won't arrive for a week or so.

    Hi

The best source is the official document 'Royal Air Force Personnel Statistics 3 Sep 1939 to 1 Sep 1945' (Air Ministry May 1946), available at https://www.mlrsbooks.co.uk/bookstor.../item1142.html as well as in the Members' Area of my website.

I tried adding my tables but the formatting is totally lost

Thanks, Malcolm. I did once have a sub to the members' area of your website, but it expired a while back. I will rejoin it and take a peek! Best wishes Charles
