    Default VR Matthews (78 Squadron)

Is anyone able to advise on the service career (posting dates / sorties / crew) of VR Matthews (Observer) who served with No 78 Squadron before being posted to No 35 Squadron in October 1942?.

    Regards

    Pete

I have no record of him completing any operations whilst at 78 Squadron, so my assumption is that he was posted in as a 'spare bod' and then moved to 35 Squadron in the same capacity. I'll check 1941 but I think the answer will be in the negative.

as you know he joined 35 Squadron along with two others, PO LeBeau and PO Dowling. The only one I have any operational record of is Le Beau. He joined the Squadron some time around September/October 41 and flew on 13 Ops before he was injured in a crash landing on returning from Bremen on the night of 29/30 June 42. So my best guess is Le Beau then returns to the Squadron at some stage having recovered from his injuries but is now a spare bod. At the end of October the 3 spare bods move to 35 Squadron.

As you are most likely aware Alan Dowling was very successful on 35 Squadron winning a DFC and Bar.
    Hope this helps
