Default Illogan (St. Illogan ) Churchyard 7 Unidentified

    Hello,
I read in an old thread on this forum that at the Illogan ( St. Illogan ) Churchyard there are 7 that are unidentified.
Is it known if any have since been identified and if not is it known how many of the seven are airmen, also any dates known ?

The CWGC site notes that there are 65 graves of which 52 are identified, 41 are RAF(WW2)

    Many thanks for any help.
    Alex

There are 42 identified airmen in the churchyard, and of the 7 unidentified (all airmen), three are buried in a single grave together with a date of 1/7/42. The Church records show that they were recovered from the sea off Fowey on that date, which coincides with the loss of 21 OTU Wellington X9637 in the sea off Fowey on the date of their recovery. Of the seven on board, only two were identified, Sgt F.D. Schmeltz was recovered from crash area, Sgt J F Clark's body must have been taken by the tide as he was recovered much further up the coast and buried in Plymouth. There are no dates on the headstones of the other four unidentified.

    Hello Alan,
    Many thanks for the reply.
If I understand you correctly, all 7 were recovered on the same day, so it follows that all 7 were crew of X9637 .
Or were only the 3 recovered and the remaining 4 on other dates which may mean that those 4 could be from other losses ?
    Thank you
    Alex

    Hello,
This is from a 2016 post,

" The unidentified RAF graves at Illogan Cemetery are marked as follows :

    Airman Buried 17-1-42
    Airmen buried 4-2-42
    Airmen buried 15-7-42
    Airmen buried 13-12-42
and the graves of 3 Airmen all 13-1-42

The airman buried 15-7-42 and the 3 airmen dated 1-7-42 are all buried next to Schmeltz. Clark was buried in Plymouth.

I think it highly likely that the airmen dated 1-7-42 are from this crew and that the airman buried 15-7-42 is also from this crew ( he is buried one grave away from Schmeltz ) , but that leaves one unaccounted for. "

    It confuses me.
As I read it there are more than 7.

    17-1-42 - airman.
    4-2-42 - airmen.( more than 1 ?).
    15-7-42 airmen.( more than 1?).
    13-12-42 airmen.( more than 1?).
    13-1-42 - 3 airmen.
    1 - 7-42 - 3 airmen.

    Hi Alex,
1 unknown found at Sennen Cove (no date given) buried 17/1/42.
1 unknown found at Vault Beach Gorran Haven, (no date given) buried 4/1/42.
1 unknown airman found Porthtowan (no date given) buried 15/7/42.
1 unknown airman found Portreath (no date given) buried 13/12/42. Possibly from Beaufort DD980, which crashed into the cliff on take off and fell into the sea, 2 killed, 2 missing.
3 unknown airmen found off Fowey following crash of Wellington X9637, 2 airman killed Sgt F.D. Schmeltz (2nd pilot) and Sgt J.F. Clark (Nav).5 missing. The three buried together in one grave have "date of death" 1/7/42, so 100% probable from X9637. The two found at Sennen and Gorran Haven could also possibly be from X9637, given the proximity of locations found, to Fowey taking tides into consideration.
