Default Query: incident at Riccall, May 12th 1943 - 5 ground crew killed

    Hello everyone

Just a follow-up to a post in the 'Unaccounted Airmen' thread for this date:

    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...rmen-12-5-1943

Five airmen are listed as losing their lives on that date, two of them are listed as being with 1658 H.C.U., based at Riccall. All five deaths are registered at Howden, so possibly all were at Riccall?

    They are:

LAC Robert FOOTE - 1437370 - registered East Howden. The Graves Registration Report Form gives his unit as 1658 C.U.

    Cpl Grenville C. HALL - 1369293 - no unit of the G.R.R.

AC2 William G. HARRIS - 1558802 - there is a 23 year old William G. Harris on FreeBMD, registered in Howden. No unit on the G.R.R.

LAC Robert LOWRY - 1502000 - the Graves Registration Report Form gives his unit as 1658 C.U.

LAC Fred UNDERWOOD - 1062161 - no unit of the G.R.R.

Would I be right in assuming they all lost their lives in the same incident? Has anyone access to the Riccall or 1658 H.C.U. records?

    Many thanks,

    Regards

    Simon

    Thnks Alex

I'd thought, judging by their ranks, that they were all ground crew.

Halifax DT637 is a possibility, but no ground casualties reported here: http://www.yorkshire-aircraft.co.uk/...k43/dt637.html

I couldn't see the incident involving JB927 on May 13th in my BCL Volume 8, though, which is also a possibility.

    Hi Brian.

I'd wondered about a road accident, but couldn't find anything in the newspapers at the time, which is unusual. I'd thought the Riccall diary may have mentioned an incident - assuming the were all at Riccall, of course.

They are all listed in Casualty Communique No. 238 in Flight Magazine, July 29th 1943, and all listed as 'Died on Active Service.'

    Regards

    Simon,

Not surprised you can't see Halifax JB927 on 13 May 1943, it was written off on 13 May 1944 (BCL8/109).

Howden Registration District also include Breighton and Holme on Spalding Moor so even if with 1658 HCU, could they have been on detachment?

1658 HCU ORB for 11th May 1943 states that an outbreak of fire in D Flight dispersal hut killed four and injured four with one dying of his injuries. No mention of this being anywhere other than at Riccall. regards Rich

Thank you Rich - that would account for all five names. It seems a day out though - the 11th not the 12th? Perhaps on the night of the 11th?

    Regards

    Simon
